Watchout Japan … Godzilla is coming

Gojira

Ady Gil

Earlier this week Sea Shepherd Conservation Society officially christened the newest addition to it’s fleet. The vessel, named Gojira (means Godzilla), was christened in Fremantle, Western Australia and is Sea Shepherd’s first vessel with Australian registry. Gojira takes the place of last year’s fleet addition, the Ady Gil. The Ady Gil was rammed by a Japanese whaling vessel in the Southern Ocean during Sea Shepherd’s last anti-whaling campaign. Due to the large amount of damage caused by the whalers, the Ady Gil’s crew had to be rescued by the Sea Shepherd vessel the Bob Barker and the Ady Gil was scuttled in the Southern Ocean… not a good day for the whales of the world. The Ady Gil was a sleek, very fast vessel that could keep up with the Japanese Whaling vessels. Now…with the addition of the Gojira, the Sea Shepherds again have a vessel that is much faster than anything the Whalers currently use, giving the anti-whaling group a long needed advantage in the battle against the illegal hunting of whales by the Japanese fleet. There has been an international ban on whaling for years but the Japanese Whalers use a loop hole to hunt the peaceful whales. They claim to be conducting scientific research. I guess that’s why they kill around 900 whales a year… only for research. The crazy thing is they can make a couple of million bucks on a large whale. The whale meat is in high demand in Japan, and can be found in supermarkets all over the country. Research…right. The Gojira is heading south to meet up with Sea Shepherd’s Bob Barker, and Steve Irwin then on to the whaling area of the Southern Ocean. Good luck to all the Sea Shepherd crew members, hope they have a safe and effective whaling season.
