Stamey’s Barbeque … Greensboro NC

Growing up in Greensboro, means growing up on Stamey’s BBQ… well, maybe not everybody that grows up in Greensboro could say that… but I sure can. I hate to admit it, but my first memory of Stamey’s is when I was very young, eating a hot dog (what, no bbq?) from inside the old building on High Point Rd. I don’t remember how long it took me to discover that this BBQ stuff is pretty damn good… but when I did figure it out, Stamey’s was “the” BBQ restaurant for me. Stamey’s has been a Greensboro favorite since 1953, but the roots of Stamey’s go much deeper than that.

The story of Stamey’s Barbeque starts with Warner Stamey. Mr Stamey moved to Lexington NC to attend high school back in the 1920′s. While living in Lexington he worked for Jess Spicegood and Sid Weaver, who sold their pit cooked BBQ from tents set up across the street from the courthouse. After learning pit cooking techniques from Spicegood and Weaver, Stamey moved back to Shelby to perfect his craft. Then in 1938 Mr Stamey moved back to Lexington, bought Spicegood’s BBQ, and re-named it Stamey’s. After years of success, in 1953, Stamey opened Stamey’s Barbeque on High Point Rd, Greensboro NC. Four years later, Stamey turned the restaurant over to his son (Charles), who was then joined by his brother (Keith) in 1970. And that’s the birth of the Stamey’s Barbeque  of today.

In the late 1970′s the brother’s expanded to a second location on Battleground Ave. and moved the High Point Rd location into a new building at the same location as the original drive-in. Yep, drive-in… back in the day I remember pulling up with the folks and ordering from the car. Like I stated before, I started off as a child with Stamey’s hot dogs, which are still popular today. Along with the hot dogs they offer BBQ dogs as well. What is a BBQ dog you ask??? It’s chopped BBQ on a hot dogs bun, that’s what. These days I stick with the chopped or sliced BBQ… and I’ve been known to eat a BBQ sandwich or two… served with slaw of course! The BBQ at Stamey’s is made the old fashion way… slow cooked shoulders over hickory coals. Cooking in a old style “smoke house”, the pitmasters at Stamey’s are like artist performing their art on a daily basis. Cooking BBQ right takes time, it’s just not a process you can rush, and the Stamey’s pimasters and crew has that on point.

In addition to the delicious sliced or chopped BBQ, you might want to try a Chicken-Q sandwich (chopped white chicken meat with Stamey’s BBQ sauce), Home Style Cobblers, Hot Stamey’s Coffee (roasted at the High Point Rd location), or some of Warner Stamey’s own hush-puppies… or you can’t go wrong with a Stamey’s BBQ sandwich, some hush-puppies, and some good old iced tea (My personal lunch order for years)! Stop by Stamey’s and try BBQ the way it should be… located across from the Greensboro Coliseum on High Point Rd. and don’t forget the Battleground Ave location too….
