12 Bones Smokehouse … Asheville NC

Ok, let me start off by saying, 12 Bones is some of the best food I have ever put in my mouth. Weather it is the chopped pork or the ribs, this is the food of the Gods. When you pull up to 12 Bones the first thing you notice is it’s proximity to the French Broad River, that flows through Asheville. Sitting on the river’s bank, the un-assuming building is the home of one of North Carolina’s best smokehouses. Owners Tom Montgomery and Sabra Kelly have created a true BBQ Lover’s dream with their selections of rubs, sauces, and overall high quality delicious food.

Now… let’s talk ribs. 12 Bones offers several rubs to choose from daily… Brown Sugar, Carolina Red, Pineapple Habanero and Blueberry Chipolte are just a few examples. They are sold 6 bones (half rack) or 12 bones (full rack) and come with two sides and a piece of cornbread. 12 Bones also offers several different sauces…There’s the sweet tomato sauce, tangy mustard, jalapeno, and spicy vinegar. A flavor for everyone, no matter what kind of sauce you were raised on. One suggestion, be prepared to wear a little sauce. Ya just can’t eat ribs without getting a little messy…

It doesn’t stop with the ribs… 12 Bones also offers delicious, Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, Chicken, and Smoked Turkey. They also offer a variety of sandwiches. From a Pulled Pork, Sliced or Chopped Brisket Sandwich to a Smoked Turkey or BLT Sandwich, but the sandwich that gets the most attention is the Hogzilla. The Hogzilla comes with pulled pork, sausage, sugar bacon, melted pepper jack cheese, on a hoagie. Soo Wee ! Come and get it…. now that’s a sandwich.

I can’t tell you about 12 Bones without talking about there sides… Several people I know go to 12 Bones just for the veggies and such. I’m kinda stuck in a rut getting jalapeno cheese grits, and corn pudding. The cheese grits have just enough jalapenos to give the grits a little bump, but not too much heat. And the corn pudding is some of the best on the planet. So, I guess you can see why I have a hard time changing it up. But they do offer several more selections… mac n cheese, mashed sweet taters, smoked potato salad, and sweet vinegar cole slaw to name a few. They also offer some delicious salads… a wedge salad, and a green salad. The green salad can be paired with Smoked Turkey, Beef Brisket, or Grilled Portabella mushroom.

Now, what to wash it all down with… what kind of BBQ restaurant would they be without some tasty iced tea? No worries, 12 Bones has that on lock down. No crazy flower teas or anything kookie. Just some good ol’ iced tea that would satisfy the most demanding Southern guy or gal. In addition to some killer tea and soft drinks they also offer some great beers. Local breweries are featured here. Choices like Nantahala, Green Man, Pisgah, and Wedge can often be found in 20 and 10 oz sizes at very reasonable prices.

If you are a swine fan like myself, you must stop by 12 Bones and have a taste of some incredible pork. These folks have this BBQ thing figured out… Heck, just ask the President. The President and the First Lady are probably 12 Bones most popular customers. They never miss a opportunity to eat some 12 Bones. Well, I guess that could be said about me too… It’s definitely good to know that the leader of the free world is a NC BBQ fan… Soo Weeee
