Rex’s Film Reviews … X-Men First Class

I tried so hard to not like this movie… Let me explain. I know the original X-MEN. Mystique and Emma Frost were not there. In fact, just about the only thing that matches the true chronology of the comic books is the time period. Another thing that’s not quite right is the team roster. The original X-MEN were as follows: Beast, Angel, Iceman, Cyclops, and Marvel Girl, not Beast, Havok, Banshee, Angel (and not Warren Worthington III), but a young girl with dragonfly wings, who wouldn’t be in the continuity until much later in the New X-men book. The Hellfire Club also didn’t come around until the late seventies in the books, but it does fit in with the hippie culture of the sixties. Okay, now that i’ve got all the nerdy pickiness out of the way, let me tell you why I loved this movie. The action is almost non stop, with moves from the characters that mimic the action from the comics. It is a very colorful movie, despite the team being in the familiar matching black and yellow uniforms towards the end. Kevin Bacon was outstanding as Sebastian Shaw, leader of the Hellfire Club. That guy still has his acting chops after all this time. I also really enjoyed the special effects of Banshee’s “sonic scream” which he not only uses as a weapon, but as a means of flight, and Havok, with his plasma blast that blast forth from his chest. The White Queen, who is a telepath, as well as having the ability to turn into living, breathing diamond… That must come in handy! This movie was a lot of fun, and one I will watch again, as I must own this one on DVD.
