This week in the garden of Sunny Point Cafe…
Like most weeks in the garden, it’s all about the weather. And man… we’ve had our share of strange weather. In the last couple of weeks we’ve had hail four times. Some storms causing more damage than others… but over all, we came out pretty well. Other than the damage to the greens (see In the Garden vol 2), the only other real damage was to a handful of tomato plants. We’ve been in a pattern for thunderstorms most of the last week, and the plants have been drinkin’ it up! The much needed rain also helped bring down the unseasonable temperatures we endured for most of June.
With the cooler temps and added moisture, we’re hoping to squeeze one more cutting out of our lettuce. It was looking like all the lettuce was going to bolt, but with the milder climate over the last week or so, the lettuce looks much more happy, with plenty of new growth. We’ve been sowing more beans (both bush and trellis), beets, radish, carrots and some sugar baby watermelon. On a regular basis we’re still cutting greens (chard and two types of kale) and basil, pulling onions and radishes, and picking raspberries. The zucchini plants are starting to bloom, so look for some stuffed blossoms on the menu soon. The squash plants are setting fruit and the eggplant plants finally look like they’re taking off. The tomato plants have gone nuts with all the rain lately. Seems like you could watch them grow… they’re growing so fast! Hope you folks are ready for some killer heirloom tomatoes… ’cause they’re coming!
