This week in the garden of Sunny Point Cafe…
This week has kinda been the quite before the storm. The storm I speak of is a storm of tomatoes… a whole bunch of tomatoes. The trickle of tomatoes has started this week so it won’t be long before the tomatoes are coming in, and coming in bunches. The kitchen staff keep asking about the tomatoes, so I know they’re looking forward to working with some great tasting heirloom tomatoes. One thing I love about this garden is being able to supply the kitchen with super premium ingredients. And heirloom tomatoes are a prime example of just that… high quality ingredients, that decades ago have fallen out of favor commercially because they don’t ship or shelve well. Meaning, they probably bruise easy and don’t do well just sitting around, but taste amazing! Well, that is no problem when we pick them by hand, then deliver the tomatoes to the kitchen using foot power. The kitchen then uses them the same day… you just can’t beat that for the freshest, best tasting ingredients possible.
In addition to the tomatoes, we’ve started picking some hot peppers, pole beans, and Floridor squash (a round yellow zucchini). We’re also picking squash blossoms (check out the photo to the left) each morning for some killer stuffed squash blossoms (offered on the dinner menu). You gotta come by the restaurant and try some soon! Oh yes, We’re still pulling onions, and radishes. And this week I’ve been sowing lettuce, carrots, and beets.
The big news for this week will actually be covered in next weeks blog… word is… Southern Living Magazine will be coming by the Sunny Point Garden on Thursday July 7th. It’s a huge honor to be in Southern Living, and I have to give a big shout out to my boss, Lou Ann Rhodes, for taking the Sunny Point Garden to the next level. Armed with knowledge, experience, and passion… she has really put the garden on the right track. She has provided the garden with true leadership, which she seems to come by naturally. Cudos Ms Lou ! We love ya….
