In The Garden … Sunny Point Vol 5

"Little Fingers" Eggplant

This week in the garden of Sunny Point Cafe…

Well… I’ve got to start by saying how nice it was having Southern Living Magazine stop by the garden a week or so ago… They dropped by early in the morning, took a bunch of photos, had some good laughs, and even took time for a killer Sunny Point Cafe breakfast. I think all of us here at the garden are looking forward to seeing our hard work showcased in the pages of Southern Living this coming fall…

"Dwarf French" Bush Beans

This time of the season the garden is in full bloom… we’re spending the better part of the mornings harvesting. We’re still taking edible flowers daily, picking green beans from both bush and trellis… picking all kinds of tomatoes, squash and squash blossoms. Cutting chard and kale, digging potatoes, pulling carrots and peppers. We’re also cutting basil, and starting to pick the smaller “Little Fingers” eggplant. The garden is starting to really produce… and the goods are looking real good!

After taking several potted potato plants, and being very disappointed in the potato yield, today we emptied one of our raised potato beds. The variety was Peruvian Purple, and the raised bed was 4 feet x 12 feet. We got just over 42 pounds… not a great haul, but not too bad either. If you’ve never grown potatoes, you don’t know what your missing! It’s one of my favorite things to grow and eat fresh from the garden. Varieties like Peruvian Purple, Russian Fingerling, and Yukon Gold just make growing potatoes more fun… and more fun to eat!
