Recorded at Will Rogers Auditorium in Fort Worth Texas, July 1978 (on 16mm film) on the day the album hit number one on the sales charts, Some Girls Live in Texas documents The Rolling Stones were as tight and committed on stage as they had sounded in the studio. With audio remastered by Bob Clearmountain, this disc really portrays the The Rolling Stones Some Girls era very well.

Influenced by the success of Punk and New Wave, the tracks on Some Girls Live are short, up-tempo, and straight to the point… the stage is very stripped down… the music is front and center. The show features mainly tracks from the Some Girls album with a hand-full of classic scattered in the mix. Charlie Watts (drummer) really shines, lying down the tempo for the boys. Fairly new guitarist, Ron Wood, seems to find his footing on this album & tour. And Jagger and Richards are true to form with both up front, doing what they do… overall the band seems to be very tight, and ready to roll. I would have loved to see the band expand the songs a bit, but that’s just not the way it was… I really enjoyed the dvd none the less… and highly suggest ya check this one out!

Produced by John Travis, the release also comes in a deluxe edition, which includes acoustic versions of all the tracks. (BTW, I really enjoyed some of the acoustic tracks more than the band all electric and such…) Most of the tracks are are pretty tight radio friendly songs. A few of the tracks are a little stretched out but only a few (I would’ve liked more! lol). My favorite track on the disc has to be “Paper Dragon”. It’s a fun little romp… great intro, then drops very nicely. “Like a paper dragon… You can never breathe fire… But you’ll never catch him … He’s a real high flyer” sings Rob Derhak (Bass). A couple of other tracks I really like are “Haze”, and “The Bones of Lazarus” (a track that has been played live for years). There are a couple of tracks that had me scratchin’ my head but overall this is a very solid album.  If you like jam bands, you’ll enjoy this release. Sure it’s not real jammy, but it’s worth you checking out for sure!

There will be live music, pin-up girl contest, custom car and bike show, and The Cut Throat Freak Show. There will also be seminars, tattoo competitions, art fusion projects, kids art fusion & activities, kids face painting, local artist art walk, and celebrity appearances & autograph sessions… and of course… AFTER PARTIES! (Asheville is Beer City USA… ya know!)

If you’ve never been to an event such as this… I highly suggest you come check it out. If ya have tats or not… really doesn’t matter… will be a good time had by all… The Renaissance Hotel has a nice rate for the Tattoo Fest… they’re making it easy to just get a room and soak up the whole experience. The cool thing about downtown Asheville is that you can park your car at the hotel and walk to some great restaurants, bars, and music venues.

Rescued Vick Dog ... Lucas

I want to remind people that Vick didn’t just simply fight dogs… no that wasn’t enough for Vick and his Crew from Bad Newz Kennels. Vick and his boys torture dogs… bunches of dogs. Why? Was it a culture thing? Was it just standard operating procedures in the dog fighting world? Well… Hell… No! It was the actions of some sick, twisted, simple minded folks that seemed to enjoy their “torture” sessions. Torture… huh? Yes… they torture dogs. They hung dogs… they drowned dogs… and even electrocuted them. The Crew from Bad Newz Kennels also would take family pets and toss them in the ring with their trained killers just so the dog could practice without getting injured so they would be ready for their next fight.

So why bring up Mike Vick again? Because in the new Dog Fighting Android App… you can be Mike Vick. Yep… crazy huh? Makes me wonder if the NFL and/or the Philadelphia Eagles know about this game option? And, if this is “just a game”… why include the option to play as Vick? I know people will say this is just another video game. But I see this issue being much larger than that. Android offering this app says to me that a large number of people in our society… just don’t get it. If a person will treat a dog badly, it’s probably safe to say they would more than likely treat other people badly. It really isn’t that complicated… and it has nothing to do with culture… has nothing to do with being from the south or being a African-American. It has everything to do with drawing a line in the sand and saying..This Is Just Not Right.

Amanda: How did you come up with the name Adam Strange??

Adam: Adam is my middle name (real name- Adam West), and I’ve always been called weird or strange, and I love comics, so Adam Strange stuck.

Amanda: Where do you get the ideas for your paintings?

Adam: Pop culture.  Also… I think the Internet is a big deal with how I paint.  I can see an image of anything I can think of…In the past artists had to travel to see art.  Now I just click anything, every museum, and billions of photos.

Amanda: When/where did you start painting?

Adam: Always, high school outside D.C. in the late 80′s.

Amanda: When did you move to Asheville?

Adam: 1995

Amanda: Tell me about your music!

Adam: [It’s] Hip hop from the viewpoint of an American traveler. Freestyle rap. Making up lyrics on the spot. Drum machines and synths and math.

Amanda: Out of all the different things you do (graphic design, making music, painting), which do you prefer?

Adam: Painting!  The actual painting part, rubbing paint on canvas…?  Love it.

Amanda: What would you consider the best way to promote yourself as an artist?

Adam: Word of mouth? I don’t know, just paint all the time, so that you have so many paintings you have to sell them cheap, and then so many people have them that you seem popular…

Amanda: What kind of qualities do you look for in a business to display your art? What to be aware of?

Adam: Until you’re famous I would say anywhere that will have you, but know your prices and what you want for your art.  If they want a high percentage, raise the price by that much.  But I go for hip places so I’ll seem more cool, coffee or skate shop, salon, hip bar. No flea market lookin’ crap.

Amanda: What do you hope to accomplish in the future?

Adam:  [A] new, better form of culture. In the near future I’m almost finished with a book of my painting and artwork, and a novel.  Plus, I’m making skateboards this summer.

Amanda: What’s your favorite color?

Adam: PANTONE 17-4432 TPX – Vivid Blue.

Amanda: What are you most passionate about?

Adam: Anthropology.

Amanda: What inspires you?

Adam: EVERYTHING!!!!!!!

Amanda: What are you working on right now?

Adam: Paintings of my heroes – 6 big Justice League paintings, finishing the Flash, started Green Lantern.  And I think I want to do paintings of professional wrestlers.  Wrestling is the most popular thing in America…it baffles me.

What is Spider Island? Manhattan residents seem to have suddenly acquired some version of Spider Man’s agility, super strength, spider sense web shooting, or all of the above, in a twisted plot hatched way back in the early days of Spidey by one professor Miles Warren, aka The Jackyl. Back in the day, The Jackyl, “borrowed” some DNA (ewwww) from Spider Man, and used it to make clones of Peter Parker. In the mid nineties, we saw how that all panned out. Now The Jackyl is doling out spider powers in the form of bedbugs that are infesting Manhattan and contaminating the residents. Oh, and not only are regular folk being spiderized, but so are some of the superheroes! Here are just  some of the examples of the “Spider Island” happenings……….

THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN #665

More of a normal story that leads up to the Spider Island storyline, this time it’s more about Peter Parker, than Spider Man. Peter and long time friend Betty Brant have had a Friday night movie night for years. Either opening weekend at the box office, or just hanging out in front of the small screen. This time is a little different, since Peter got a job with Horizon Laboratories. He’s too busy to go see a foreign film that Betty wants to see, so she eventually goes by herself, even though the only cinema showing this particular film is in a very scetchy part of town. Sure enough, as she is leaving the theater, she is mugged and a locket that has been passed down is stolen. Remembering what happened with his Uncle Ben, when he couldn’t be bothered, resulting in Ben’s murder, he scours the streets to find out who attacked his friend. Just as he follows the spider tracer right to the guy, Aunt May calls him to go to the hospital immediately, so he leaves his revenge for another time.

What has Spider Woman got to do with any of this? More than you think. Way back in Marvel Two in One #60-61, Spider Woman and the ever lovin’ blue eyed THING had to fight a spiderized version of Alicia Masters, the Thing’s girlfriend at the time. And how did she get that way? The Jackyl, of course! Reed Richards, leader of the Fantastic Four, found a cure for Ms. Masters condition, and now her blood may be the cure for the recent spider virus that is causing chaos in Manhattan. Only problem? Someone else is looking for Ms. Masters – Spider Woman’s old nemesis The Gypsy Moth! GM is new and improved, with technological advances that make her deadlier than ever. This issue reminds me of the old Spider Woman series from the early eighties.

Two stories about the new Hobgoblin, and a Jackyl side story. First the Hobgoblin goes into more of his origin, and the motive behind his actions, and what drove him to become the new Hobgoblin. His jealousy over a female reporters boyfriend (who inherits some unique style of spider powers), resulting in a brawl in the streets of Manhattan. The end results will surprise you. Next up, the Jackyl creates the Tarantula (different one, I guess) who is the resurrected Kaine, the original clone of Spider Man. Oddly, one of the clones of Gwen Stacy shows up to kill the transformed Kaine, unsuccessfully. This would be the first meeting of the Jackyl and the Queen, who has her own ideas for dominance of first NY, and then the rest of the world.

SPIDER ISLAND : AVENGERS – ONE SHOT

First off I gotta say how much I like the cover by Leinil Yu, with Hawkeye, Crystal (not the inhuman), Ms. Marvel, and Frogman?!…. Yep, Frogman is lending a hand against the spider weirdos, whether the Avengers want the help or not. And at first they don’t, but then Frogman, inadvertently or not starts to become a great asset to the team. Who knew? Also, it looks like Hawkeye has acquired spider powers, which would be cool if he knew how to use them at all. He spends the majority of the issue just trying to walk around while covered in web fluid, and having his bow and arrows sticking to him. Fun story all around, and makes Frogman a little bit more of a credible character in the Marvel Universe.

CLOAK AND DAGGER #1 (OF 3)

Cloak and Dagger have always been looked at as second string characters in the Marvel Universe, but that is all about change. In the past, C+D have had several mini series and one shots, even appearing as a back up story with Dr. Strange in Strange Tales. In this issue, we find Cloak and Dagger being evicted from the old, decrepit church that they were using as an unofficial base of operations. Where are the two heroes to go? Well, unbeknownst to Tandy (Dagger), Tyrone (Cloak) has put the two in the hero for hire business. Now, I wasn’t really clear on what this story had to do with the Spider Island storyline, but Mr. Negative is in it, and consults an oriental fortune teller who reveals that Dagger will be Mr. Negative’s killer.

Spider-Herc?  Hercules, now living on earth, Manhattan to be exact, is working as a bartender in a Greek restaurant. So, how does the son of Zeus end up with spider powers? Like most everyone else, bedbugs, of course! After being bitten, Hercules finds he has developed certain powers, like spider sense, and strength added to his own godly strength, as well as agility. At one point he takes on the X-MEN, of whom Wolverine smells first, when everyone else thinks it’s Spidey, he can smell leather, olive oil, and beer, so he knows it’s his old drinking buddy, The Mighty Hercules. Herc wears a kind of wrestler/spider man costume in this issue, which I guess in the next issue goes from red/blue to green/orange, which are the colors Herc used to wear. Fun issue, and a bit silly, but most of the Hercules comics are.
